 A/GAL network helps us better understand and promote the well-being of the
  children and families we serve. As a Network we are committed to promotin
 g cultural competence among staff and volunteers\, reducing disproportiona
 lity and ensuring equitable outcomes for all children regardless of their 
 race\, gender\, sexual orientation and zip code. \n\nTopics to be covered 
 in the series include: \n• What is cultural awareness – diversity\, equity
  and inclusion\; biases and micro-aggressions\n• Understanding self in rel
 ationship to the children and families we serve \n• Considerations when in
 teracting across differences\n• Role of social justice in the our work \n•
  Infusion of allyship into our work (defined as: lifelong process of build
 ing relationships based on trust\, consistency\, and accountability with m
 arginalized individuals and/or groups of people)  \n\nBy participating in 
 this training\, you will: \n• Become more familiar with the concept of cul
 tural awareness and the important role it plays in successful and impactfu
 l CASA/GAL best interest advocacy\n• Develop knowledge around social justi
 ce and allyship\n• Gain an understanding of the competencies and skills of
  a culturally competent advocate \n\nPresenter’s bio: \nShari Lynn Johnson
  earned her BSSW with a minor in gerontology from the University of Alabam
 a at Birmingham and an MSW with a focus in health care and gerontology fro
 m Wayne State University in Detroit. She joined the SocialWork@Simmons fac
 ulty as a Professor of Practice in May of 2016 to serve as the senior facu
 lty lead for the SWO 409 (Dynamics of Racism & Oppression) course communit
 y (re) organizing/building and activism\; social justice and diversity\, s
 pecifically around the lived experiences of marginalized communities of TB
 LGQI and people of color. Professor Johnson has nearly 10 years of experie
 nce teaching cultural anthropology at a local community college after comp
 leting all of her coursework for a MA in linguistic anthropology\, also fr
 om Wayne State University in Detroit.
