 uip staff and volunteer advocates with the skills and knowledge to work wi
 th children and families from many cultures and experiences\, the National
  CASA/GAL Association for Children is hosting a webinar on ICWA and the ro
 le CASA/GAL staff and volunteer advocates can have in advocating for India
 n children. According to the Bureau of Indian Affairs\, the purpose of the
  Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) is â€œâ€¦to protect the best interest of Indi
 an Children and to promote the stability and security of Indian tribes and
  families by the establishment of minimum Federal standards for the remova
 l of Indian children and placement of such children in homes which will re
 flect the unique values of Indian cultureâ€¦ â€œ(25 U.S. C. 1902). ICWA provid
 es guidance to States regarding the handling of child abuse and neglect an
 d adoption cases involving Native children and sets minimum standards for 
 the handling of these cases.\n\nBy being grounded in foundational knowledg
 e on the law\, CASA/GALs can be a powerful voice in ICWA cases. Topics to 
 be covered include:\nâ€¢ What makes ICWA so important to CASA/GAL best inter
 est advocacy efforts\nâ€¢ Historical perspective of Indian policy decisions
 \nânâ A discussion of ICWA and the role CASA/GAL can play in increasing comp
 liance\n\nBy participating in this training\, attendees will:\nâ€¢ Become mo
 re familiar with ICWA through a historical lens: what is it and why does i
 t exist\nâ€¢ Learn about the Indian Child Welfare Act Proceedings\; Final Ru
 le (2016) and its impact on Indian children involved in the child welfare 
 system\nâ€¢ Develop knowledge around what is different in advocating for an 
 Indian child\nâ€¢ Gain an understanding of the role CASA/GALs can have in in
 creasing state compliance with ICWA\n\nPresenterâ€™s bio: Angela Fasana\nMs.
  Fasana is a member of the Tribal Nation of the Confederated Tribes of Gra
 nd Ronde and currently serves as the Education Department Manager. Prior t
 o her move the Education Department in October of 2019\, she served as Cou
 rt Administrator for the Grand Ronde Tribal Court for 19 years. The Tribal
  Court operates the only Tribal CASA Program in Oregon. Ms. Fasana also wo
 rked as a Legal Assistant in the Tribal Attorneyâ€™s Office for approximatel
 y three years\, working primarily with the Tribeâ€™s child welfare office an
 d representing the Tribe in Tribal Court on dependency cases. Ms. Fasana r
 eceived her Bachelor Degree from Portland State University in 1994\, and a
  J.D. from Northwestern School of Law at Lewis and Clark in 1997.
